Linguistic Topics: The wordiness of a word
Digital Topics: Graphics & Infographics - Look at some graphics/infographics/pictures (especially if they’re linguistically relevant!). Compare a couple that you think are really good with some you think are really bad. Talk about what the parts of the image are— How is the image composed? How do the parts interact? What’s the difference between the good and bad images?

:: About Test One — you can take Test One at any time during the October 3rd weekend. HOWEVER, once you log into Blackboard and begin the test, you must complete it within 90 minutes. Do NOT log in until you’re certain you have time to finish the test. If something goes wrong with your computer while taking the test, you need to fill out a full bug report (see syllabus), with images proving the error that you encountered and the date/time. Without a bug report, you will NOT be given a second chance at Test One. ::

- Over the weekend, think about these three aspects of your Social Identity…
• In addition to the R.A.C.E.S. way of thinking about social identity, there’s also what we can think of as a “community” approach. What “communities of practice” do you belong to? Are these communities set apart by their ways of talking? - Take a closer look at the kinds of ads that Facebook and Google show you (or the kinds of sponsored posts you see on Twitter or Tumblr). What do they have in common? What aspects of your social& digital identity are these ads drawing upon?
- What does your online presence say about who you are socially? Is this related to how you talk?
- Think about what socioeconomic and cultural labels you’d give yourself; think about what labels and categories the data-miners have given you.
